Math 7 Goals
As a math team, we are dedicated to providing more resources, increasing transparency, and fostering greater parent involvement in students' learning. With eight periods a week focused on building math skills and accelerating progress, we aim to ensure every student has the support they need to succeed. By keeping parents informed and engaged, we create a collaborative environment that enhances student achievement and strengthens the connection between school and home.
For the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year, we have set out the following goals for ourselves and our classes:
- Help all students achieve a 15 + point gain on their SBACC Scores
- Increase parent engagement
- Decrease the number of D's and F's in our classes
Grade Breakdown
Classwork 10%
Focus Areas 15%
Focus Areas represent key concepts taught throughout the year, and students engage with them through a "self-directed learning" cycle to earn this portion of their grade. They receive a playlist of resources to study and take notes on. Once they feel prepared, they complete a 14-question assessment, which evaluates 2-3 essential skills and includes 4 questions modeled after released SBAC questions to help students prepare for the end-of-year assessment. To "master" a Focus Area, students must score a 10 or higher. If not, they are responsible for reviewing the material further and retaking the assessment until mastery is achieved. Focus Areas remain part of students' grades each quarter, even if they were introduced in a previous quarter.
This learning is done through Canvas
Quizzes 20%
Quizzes are given halfway through a unit and assess key skills that have already been taught, which are essential for success on both the SBAC and end-of-unit assessments. The quiz questions are based on our curriculum's "Cool Downs" to ensure students are mastering the necessary skills as they progress through the unit.
End of Unit Assessment 25%
End-of-unit exams assess students' understanding of key concepts and skills taught throughout the unit. These exams include questions from SBAC released items and our curriculum to provide a comprehensive evaluation of student readiness for future content and their ability to apply what they've learned. The results also help prepare students for larger assessments like the SBAC.
End of Quarter Exams 30%
End-of-quarter exams are cumulative assessments that cover key concepts taught throughout the quarter. These exams include questions from our curriculum and CAASPP-released items to ensure students are consistently practicing the types of questions and skills they will encounter on state tests. By reviewing all major topics covered in the quarter, these exams help reinforce learning, track student progress, and identify areas where additional support may be needed.

How can your student improve their grade?
Quizzes
Students can make up or retake their quizzes at any time from home after we take them in class. To do so, they will log into Edcite.com, go to the assignments section, and click the retake button next to the quiz. Once they improve their grade, they need to message me on ATLAS to notify me of the new score. Quizzes can be retaken as many times as needed to demonstrate mastery.
Classwork
Classwork can be corrected and made up at any time, allowing students the opportunity to improve their understanding and their grades. Encourage your child to regularly check ATLAS for updates on their classwork grades and any missing assignments. When making up or correcting classwork, students must show all their work to earn full credit. All lessons, resources, and assignments required to make up classwork can be easily accessed under the "Curriculum Supports" section below.
Focus Areas
A Focus Area is a 14-question quiz that students must take in class, with the goal of scoring a 10 or higher to demonstrate mastery. If your child doesn’t meet the mastery score on their first attempt, they can improve their grade by retaking the quiz.
Here’s how they can fix their grade in this category:
- Study at home: Have your child use the resources available on Canvas to study and take thorough notes on the Focus Area topics.
- Show their notes: Once they feel prepared, they should bring their notes to me during a Self-Directed Learning period.
- Retake the quiz: During this period, they will have the opportunity to retake the Focus Area quiz. Students can retake the quiz as many times as necessary until they achieve the required score of 10 or higher.
By consistently using this process, students can improve their Focus Area grades and deepen their understanding of the material.
End of Unit Exam
After students have completed their end-of-unit assessments, they have the opportunity to improve their score by completing a test make-up form. Here’s how the process works:
- Request missed questions: Students should ask for the specific test questions they missed.
- Complete practice: They will receive corresponding questions from the practice test to work on.
- Redo the questions two times: To reinforce learning, students must complete each missed question twice.
- Earn half credit: For each successfully corrected question, students will earn half credit toward their final test grade.
This process allows students to revisit challenging concepts and improve their test scores while solidifying their understanding.
